I've had 3 of these lamps. The first, I obtained at a now-defunct Pet shop. Unfortunately, it was defective and burned out in two days. I took it back to the pet shop, and they refused to replace it. They merely offered me a 10% discount on another bulb! (At their price, that was only $1.90. EXPENSIVE bulb!) I contacted Zoo Med, they had me send a copy of the receipt, and the Bar Code from the box, and they sent me a replacement that I have used as a heater for my Cavies (Guinea Pigs) for over two winters. When I increased the size of my herd, I obtained another heat lamp. This time, I ordered it online and paid only about $20.00 FOR THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY! (Bulb, Fixture, and Shipping.) I TRUST Zoo Med. I know that with electrical components there is always the chance of getting defective units. BUT Zoo Med STOOD BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT. These lamps create a warm spot that isn't too hot @ 15" (38.10 Cm) above the floor of the cage. (ALWAYS leave a section of the cage UNLIT by the heat lamp, so the animal can find a cooler spot, to prevent overheating.) This lamp can be used for reptiles, birds, Guineas, rabbits, and many other animals. It is perfect for nocturnal animals, as they are unable to see red light, therefor it will not disrupt their Circadian Rhythm. NOTE: This applies to the RUBY RED lamp, NOT the white infrared lamp.I have a large tortoise table and I use different bulbs to control the climate. These bulbs do last for several months.Had this thing on 24/7 for several week straight at a time raising baby chicks indoors last spring. It made it through two batches of chicks, so it was on for about 9 or 10 straight weeks total, and it hasn't burned out yet. So it works. Also, I like how this model does put out a little light compared to the ceramic infrared kind (which outputs heat only and zero light) because when raising chicks, you'll notice they like to be able to have a little light so they can see 24/7 in case they get hungry or thirsty in the middle of the night and need to find their way to the feeder. I switched to the ceramic infrared kind one day, and the chicks cried and cried that night for about an hour, so I switched the bulb back to this infrared incandescent one and they calmed back down.So far seems be ok, price is bit high, but seems to do its job. As for longevity not sure.I bought three of these over a year ago and the first one is still going strong. I live in Florida so I only use the heat lamp after feeding, but I'm still impressed. When I buy the ones at the pet store, they only last a few months.I have a California Kingsnake in a 2.5 ft high cage. I rest the heat lamp on the top screen off to one side. The heat seems to be the perfect amount and since I have him in the bedroom with me, I like that it's not super bright.Great light for nocturnal viewing and warmth plus it last a really longtime ZooMed makes great reptile productsI have been using these bulbs as my 24 hour heat source for all my basking stations for many, many years and the Zoo Med quality is very consistent. Some of my turtles spend half the night up on their basking stations, so I need to keep the heat up there even after the timer shuts off the UVB day lamps. Very happy, longtime customer!I bought two of these at the same time and was worried they would come already broken, but no! They work great and I keep them on 24/7 for my my python and leopard geckos. I have already had them for about a month and am still very pleased with them both and for the price.Apart from the shcokingly expensive price tag that comes with these types of bulb it does the job great and does last my tortoise a long time.Tough product.. seems to be well built with proper red glass unlike cheaper versionscouple months daily use and still with no problems. Heatin very wellThe bulb didn't get as hot, it is only 75W but it does the job, my hands, elbows, feet hurts, just shine at it for 15 minutes, the pain is gone! At least it gives a warm feeling to make you feel better than an ice pack.Beware, it doesn't have the brightness as a regular 75W light bulb, doesn't mean that it don't hurt when you stare at it, if you want something to past your time, try to look away from the light with your books, mobile phone or whatever, it could hurt your eyes badly.I have a large aviary and I am not sure how non-visible and non-intrusive this light is as they claim, because they avoid the spot like plague at night, it must be very disruptive light to bird sleep, something you wont know if you have your bird or animal in small cage and they have no option to avoid it. I use it daytime, but nighttime turn off, budgies hate it and it is very bright red light. My entire room is red and visible from the street, I do not understand why there is so much light output.
