I pulled out my old DC heater after soaking it in penetrating oil. It had been in there for about 18 years. The new one would not install all the way into the sleeve. I worked it trying to get it in, rotating it as I pushed down. I pulled it out and filed down any raised markings and tried again. Holding it up against a straight edge, I could see it was bent. By that time, I had broken the wires off this new heater. The wires are crimped onto the nichrome heating element and the crimps let go. I never installed this, but instead cut off the open end of my old heater and crimped the wires back onto the heating element. I insulated them with high temp polyimide tape.
